LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Kentucky recently opened the doors to expanded dining and student support spaces at the Gatton Student Center.
The project, approved by the UK Board of Trustees in October 2019, was the result of the university’s strategic plan to continue to increase undergraduate enrollment and high participation levels in UK meal plans used in colleges. student center restaurants.
The expansion will house the Disability Resource Center (DRC), Community Resources and Services for Students, the Violence Prevention and Intervention Center (VIP), Financial Wellness and Student Support Services. students, all housed in the Student Success Office, as well as a UK International Center (UKIC) outpost, and it allows for additional dining space in Champions Kitchen.
“The expansion of the Gatton Student Center creates two new levels of space dedicated to providing services that help our students connect with counselors, advocates and each other,” Turner said. “This newly expanded footprint will make access to these programs even easier for members of our UK community.”
Underlining the university’s commitment to its students and the wider campus community, the Gatton Student Center has become the heart of the campus and an integral space to support the UK’s university mission. These newly opened spaces increase the visibility of several key resources that the UK provides to its students and homes as part of Student Success’ goal to help a diverse community of learners achieve success with equity, holistic and inclusive.
“Students should visit the new Student Center Extension to access services offered by multiple Student Success Units,” Turner said. “Additionally, based on student requests for additional spaces to congregate and connect with one another, the expansion provides a casual seating area and kitchenette for student use on the second floor and a lounge area relaxed on the third floor.”
Join the Office for Student Success from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, November 10, for the grand opening of the new Gatton Student Center. Participants can tour the space, play activities, enjoy refreshments and food, and win prizes.
The Gatton Student Center is open from 7 a.m. to midnight seven days a week during regular academic times, with events held during those times, such as movies or gatherings for students in the Cats Den.

About newly opened spaces:
ground floor: The DRC provides services to the university community so that students with disabilities have an equal opportunity to fully participate in all aspects of university life. Serving students with a wide range of disabilities, DRC consultants will meet students one-on-one to discuss their needs and how to succeed in the UK. This may include the student receiving accommodation letters, accommodation testing services, alternative text services, links to community resources, captioning and interpreting services, registration of animal d assistance, temporary disability services or labor market transition services.
VIP Center: The VIP Center serves as a place where students, faculty and UK community staff can seek confidential services. People come to the VIP Center for the first time for many reasons. Many want to get involved or learn more about the services available, and others come forward because they or someone they care about has been affected by sexual or gender-based interpersonal violence. Whatever their reason for entering, visitors can expect to be warmly welcomed and immediately connected to confidential resources.
Financial well-being: Financial Wellness aims to engage students in financial literacy programs and provide a venue for peer mentorship through the MoneyCATS team. Financial Wellness also provides great resources to help UK students stay connected and well-equipped to manage their ever-changing financial needs.
Student Support Services: Student Support Services is a federally funded program designed to work with first-generation, low-income, or students with documented disabilities. The office offers a holistic approach to working with students, designed to facilitate retention and graduation.
Off-Campus Student Services: Off-Campus Student Advising promotes and enhances the off-campus student experience through education, advocacy, and participation. The off-campus counselor helps students strengthen their connection to campus and overcome obstacles that emerge from off-campus life.
Advice for first-generation students: First-Generation Student Advising supports first-generation students in the UK, from recruitment to graduation, through research-based programs, resources, best practices and advocacy to campus-wide on the needs of students who are the first in their families to go to university. Advisers advocate for first generation students within their colleges and work with other campus offices to provide the best resources to promote first generation student success in the UK.
international center: UKIC is leading internationalization efforts in the UK. UKIC’s specialist staff support international students in the UK who come from over 100 countries, and education abroad advisers help students plan their education abroad experience. With offices in Bradley Hall and Lucille Caudill Little Fine Arts Library, UKIC’s new space in the Gatton Student Center offers a warm welcome to any student looking to explore global learning.
